Iraq
I recently watched a great news piece on pbs.org about journalists around the world who are being murdered for doing their jobs. The murderers were all working for powerful dictators or militia leaders. Most of the situations were very similar to those in Iraq right now where there is a native struggle for power. In some cases these struggles and murders have gone on for years with no one truly fighting to establish and honor a rule of law or a guarantee of the most basic of civil rights such as Life or the Freedom of Speech.
Now, here is the Iraqi nation one step away from a vacuum of power trying to get their minds around this new concept of their own human rights, but before this can take hold, the provider of these rights is about to leave because of their own political weaknesses; our weaknesses. Most of the Journalists who have been killed in Iraq have died in the streets while reporting on combat operations of one type or another. They were reporting the truth for the world to see. The Journalists who have died in these other countries have been killed while sleeping in their homes or shot while doing a live broadcast in front of their house of government by someone who just walks up and shoots them dead and of course everyone around sees nothing, but fear. If a journalist had to die, I think they would want to chose the veracity in which it were done.
My point is this, if the U.S grows weaker and leaves, the future attempts of a free media and therefore human rights in this region need not have the dignity to die in battle as death will come to them quietly in their own homes and in their own goodnight. Basic human rights in Iraq have not even got to their feet yet and we are going to take their cane away? Our efforts there are working. There are more media outlets there than ever before giving both sides of the story in the Middle East to the Middle East. Because of the U.S troops, the media is uncovering all sorts of corruptions in the Iraqi militias, the police forces and even in the new leadership. This is a good thing. This is a necessary thing that is happening. Even Al Jazira (English version) is saying that things are turning around in Iraq. The politicizing of the War by the U.S congress and the American Media trivializes the epic struggle that is being played out in this fight. Any politician who would try to raise their standing before these basic rights are in place should be told to sit in the corner while these serious issues are dealt with by serious people.
This war for Human Rights cannot be waged in most areas of the world as the corruption in North Korea, Russia and other places is complete and therefore unwinnable as we know it today. This is not the case in Iraq. This war can be won and must be won at all costs. There can be only victory and when this is so, a human's right to exist will flourish. Self sacrifice has always been a cornerstone of every effort to overcome such levels of adversity as the ones we face together with the people of Iraq. Personal gain from our politicians has no place at this staging area of freedom, it's beseeching for a wide birth cannot be heard. So sayeth history.
